Researchers have been able to eliminate tinnitus in a group of rats by stimulating a nerve in the neck and playing a variety of sound tones over a period of time. You are not alone. A small device is placed directly on the Vagus nerve, and electrical pulses stimulate the nerve while patients listen to certain sounds. Researchers from University of Iowa monitored particular brain areas that are involved when the mysterious sounds are formed. Some of the rats underwent vagus nerve stimulation in the presence of a variety of sound tones, while the rats in the control group received vagus nerve stimulation and no tones were played. Tinnitus is a real phenomenon. To be able to answer that question, the team studied a person’s brain activity during the exact occurrence of tinnitus.

They compared the result of the strong and weak occurrence among the participants. Tinnitus varies considerably in intensity and type. Many different factors may be involved. In their findings, it was proposed that the ringing experienced by an individual is oftentimes damaging that leads to hearing damage. But what’s worse is that, it also disperses in other parts of the brain. Brain monitoring is only performed in a few prestigious medical centers, which includes the University of Iowa. Persons who report tinnitus most often have some degree of hearing loss.

It is very rare to locate patients who are also subjected to epilepsy medications that had to undergo invasive brain monitoring, while suffering from tinnitus altogether – which is the case of the 50-year-old man. To make findings published in the journal Current Biology clear, brain pathways are activated by tinnitus and not simply from the ringing sound alone. The ringing symptom is difficult to cure by medication or other therapeutic treatments. When inner ear structures become damaged or destroyed, discordant signals may occur in the brain. By undergoing this treatment, patients are taught to control their brainwaves that will help stop the ringing whenever it occurs. Tinnitus often starts as an irritating experience that leads to devitalizing feeling on extreme conditions. Most patients also develop depression, anxiety and uncontrollable anger when they can’t help stop the perceptual sound.
